Recently I read, letting go is not the same as doing without. Staples are basically your neutrals. This year is all about simplifying my life to make room for big things to come next year. Before I started dressing with less, I remember thinking a dress I saw in a magazine would make me look beautiful or feel sexy. What not to expect from this article Recommendations on what to buy.
This is not something I had heard of before but I would love to not have to try on three outfits before deciding what to wear. Thank you for inspiring change in a positive way! Maybe 5 in a few categories, but not 5 total lol. The rest of this looks super amazing. Thank you for sharing. I followed Un-Fancy and kept toying with the capsule idea. The only commitment I made was buying the pieces she linked and gaining more clothes ahah!!
I am in the process of moving and need to cut waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down on my closet. Wish me luck… I start this project tomorrow at 10AM. Love love love your blog. This is a great idea! You did all the hard work for us. You would be proud of me, Lindsay!
Thanks for the good information! I like your idea of a base wardrobe, I feel it would make it easier for me. Hmm, gotta think about it! I feel like keeping things in a separate room really helped me with that.
I stumbled upon a capsule wardrobe by accident. As in all cotton, comfy, machine washable no dry cleaning. I literally bought clothes based on if they were toddler friendly. I had a very minimal wardrobe before I knew what a capsule wardrobe was. Now I shop with purpose, but still have a minimal wardrobe. It is the best thing ever. If you need a little inspiration or just want to play with style, you should try the stylebook app. Love that you shared this post! This is timely, as one of my projects this year is to create a wardrobe that I actually like.
This will help me conceptualize things a bit. I HATE shopping — especially clothes and shoe. My big problem nowadays is that I hate everything that is out. Not comfortable in that kind of thing. When did normal fitting clothes go out of style?!!! But, I am going to get a a handle on things this year…even if it kills me.
But I should be looking a little bit more put together at the office than I currently am…! My thrift store must get a lot of sunshine from the high end stores because most if what I buy still has tags. A weekend project that I can attack with enthusiasm and gusto.
Not only do I like cooking, I also enjoy organizing. I have one question, though. The shoes I use for running—would they go in the Base category? Once in a while I do wear them to work if my feet are a bit sore from work week overuse I get around a lot at my job. Good question — I put mine in the base category because I only wear them for running. I think I put them in my workout category. Really need to do this!
Just clicked on your PDF download offered for the printable, but got your e-cookbook download pop-up, btw…. Finally, people who get it! My friends are apparently the opposite of me the kind of people who thrive on picking out something fabulous and different and thoughtful every morning. Tackling my closet and dresser is something I desperately need to do, and this is going to be super helpful, thank you so much for sharing!! Can I just say how fun this post is? And like you said, 10 second clothing choices.
I have two pairs of the same black pants and a shorts version, two of the same t-shirt different colors and a long sleeve version, a couple baselayer tank tops and a couple sleep shorts, and that is IT. Everyone else in our family has about the same ratio a few more items for the younger children that still get messy super quick , and as long as we do laundry every days, it works brilliantly. I do also second the quality thing though.
And I do totally follow you guys like a little lost puppy. Thank you thank you thank you for writing this post! But now I feel really determined and you have laid it out so practically. This has the be the simplest explanation of how to create a capsule wardrobe. I spent purging, so I can no spend coordinating. I have never heard of the Capsule Wardrobe. I am totally a minimalist, especially after we sold everything we owned and moved from Minnesota to Florida fitting all of our belongings in 2 cars…yep!
I'm sneaking bites of brussel sprout salad from the fridge every 3 minutes. I think that means I'm a grown up now. Brussel sprouts in and of themselves are kind of fun, but really, how fun are shaved brussel sprouts? This salad is full of fun things. Like using a nifty mandoline, making your house smell like bacon, and whisking emulsions.
Just try saying that. DO make this salad and be…. I look at this picture and my mind goes yumyumyumyumyumyum. Can't stop the yum track in my head. I find this very helpful. Your blog has really helped me with the idea of getting started. I dont know what to start up with???? Love love love this!! Went to look for a couple of pieces to fill in that would work better tops, etc.
Fashion can be minimalistic. Indeed the most classic looks require minimal pieces that mix and match easily. My hairdresser taught me that every woman has one wash and go look — and from reading I learned that most of us have one killer look that we feel good in AND flatters us — think Audrey Hepburn, pencil slacks and white long sleeved shirt with flats — find your best look and stick with it is the mantra of many a fashion magazine editor.
That said letting go of the old, outdated and worn out pieces is difficult for me. Recently I read, letting go is not the same as doing without. I am really keen to start this, but have my wedding next year to save for so cash is a bit tight so this project may have to wait until next year!
It feels wrong chucking them, do you give them away or sell them on ebay, or..? Cheap designer heels as well. This is where I have soooo much trouble… my wardrobe at the mo basically consists of 2 pars of jeans and 4 vest tops….. I really have to start from scratch…. Im just finding this sooooo hard. Some reasons to have a capsule wardrobe are to save money, make sure you love everything in your wardrobe, make space in your closet so you can see the clothes, have things which work well together….
A capsule wardrobe should be the backbone of your wardrobe, not a seasonal thing. It must be conformed by staple pieces. Staples are basically your neutrals. Neutrals are just like a blank canvas that you can build your outfits on….
That is up to you. Make the experiment work for you! If I may add a comment, I believe that the whole point is to help you find the least number of pieces that are required to cover your personal needs as a private, professional, what-ever entity of your life and at the same time help you in seeing clothes as investment material instead of a shopaholic!!
In my opinion if you have 35 pieces by which you are happy with do not drop any of them. I could say the same to someone who has 82 pieces BUT everything is necessary for her way of living. You can wear the jeans instead.
I saw an organization tip that might work for Project ladies with a few too many things on their list, like the author!
When hanging up your clothes, put the hangers on the rod backwards. When you wear something, you put it back on forwards. I have recently pared down my closet from over items to a very small amount. I am trying to wrap my head around the pairing of like items to make multiple outfits from a few choice items.
I do love how much room my tiny closet has now! Excuse me if I missed something as I was reading the article, but why do accessories like your bracelets have to be included? Surely they are so sentimental that you should not count them? They are also generally cheaper to buy and more likely to change with each season. Instead of constantly updating your clothes, you can purchase small accessory items to change your closet.
People change up the rules all the time to make it more approachable. I wear nice-fabric yoga pants as dressier pants. This is not an extreme way of life, or a project in […]. How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe. Would you like to build a capsule wardrobe?
